World Masters Athletics Championships Perth 2016

Thousands of athletes from around the world will descend on Perth in 12 months to compete in the 2016 World Masters Athletics Championships from 26 October to 6 November 2016.

Athletes aged 35 years and over are eligible to compete at the Masters level in the games.

Tourism Minister Kim Hames said the 2016 World Masters Athletics Championships would be one of the biggest events Western Australia would see next year in terms of visitor numbers and economic impact.

“We’re expecting thousands of people from around 80 countries to compete in the Perth 2016 World Masters Athletics Championships which get under way in exactly one year from today,” Dr Hames said.

“People who compete at Masters championships typically spend a couple of weeks before or after competition exploring the host destination so we anticipate many of the athletes will disperse across the State, bringing a great benefit to our regions as well as Perth.”

The opening ceremony will be held at Elizabeth Quay on 25 October 2016. Competition will be held at the WA Athletics Stadium, Mount Claremont and Ern Clark Athletics Centre, Cannington as well as other locations around Perth.

Perth is only the third Australian city to host the championships since they started in 1975. Other host cities were Melbourne in 1987 and Brisbane in 2001.
