Australia Post stamp price increase

From 4 January 2016, Australia Post introduced a number of price increases and service downgrades to its letters service.

Australians now have a choice of Priority and a Regular slower letter services for sending their letters within Australia. This is now in line with what has been available to business customers since June 2014.

The Basic Postage Rate (BPR) for a normal letter has increased from 70 cents to $1, which applies to the new slower “Regular Service”.

The Priority letters service offers delivery within 1-4 business days depending on its destination, while the Regular service is up to two business days longer than Priority or up to six days for a letter delivery.

To send a letter at the faster Priority speed will require the purchase of a Priority label from their local Post Office or the Australia Post online shop and place it next to the stamp.

A Priority label will cost an extra $0.50 cents – a total of $1.50 per letter, an increase of 80 cents.

Australia Post will continue to maintain the concession stamp price at 60 cents, which is available to eligible holders of a:

  • Pensioner Concession Card
  • Health Care Card (all types)
  • Commonwealth Seniors Health Card
  • Department of Veterans’ Affairs Card
  • Veterans’ Repatriation Health Card.

See the Australia Post website about details of how to get the cheaper concession stamps.

Christmas greeting cards will continue to cost 65 cents.
