Masters Athletics Championships kicks off at Darwin
For the first time the premier Australian Masters Athletics Championships 2017 kicks off in the Northern Territory today.
President of Athletics NT Kevin Mulvahil said, “Having almost 700 entrants to the 2017 NT Athletics Masters Games is exceptional and demonstrates the importance of sport and tourism’s role in promoting the NT.
“I’m grateful of the support the NT Government has shown us, along with the many volunteers who have spent the best part of two years planning this event,” Mr Mulvahil said.
The 2017 NT Masters Athletics Games runs until 12 June at the Arafura Stadium in the Marrara Sporting Complex. The facility offers an international-standard athletics track, as well as long jump, steeplechase, javelin, seated throws and a netted hammer and discus throw facilities.
Minister for Tourism and Culture Lauren Moss said, “Almost 700 athletes will compete at the event providing a boost for tourism and job creation in the Territory. The success of these championships will provide an opportunity for Athletics NT to welcome even more national and international events to the Territory in the future.
"The championships provide athletes with the opportunity to compete at our very own international-standard track amongst a wonderful Darwin setting.”
“To all of the athletes who will compete across more than 300 different events, I wish you all the success in the competition ahead,” Minister Moss said.
