New NT seniors abuse resources

The Northern Territory Government is providing $300,000 for a range of jobs and initiatives that will improve awareness and offer resources for those suffering from elder abuse.

Minister for Territory Families Dale Wakefield said that elder abuse is a significant issue, with research indicating that an estimated 10%-15% of senior Territorians are affected.

“Funding is being provided to Darwin Community Legal Service to continue their work on the 1800 information line that provides support to senior Territorians on elder abuse,” Ms Wakefield said.

“The funding will also support two full-time and one part-time job, as well as a range of activities and legal assistance across the Territory, including to remote communities.”

The announcement comes as Northern Territory seniors celebrate Seniors Month with a range of activities across the Territory.

The Territory Labor Government has provided $61,000 funding for 54 events to celebrate Seniors Month, as well as $30,000 to Council on the Ageing Northern Territory (COTA) to produce the calendar.

Ms Wakefield said Government is also reviewing the “outdated and unfair Pensioner and Carer Concession Scheme”.

“Public consultation on a new Scheme is underway and I urge Territorians to have their say on what they want to see improved,” Ms Wakefield said.

“There is significant disparity between the top and bottom users of the Scheme and it disadvantages people that don’t own their own home or who live in rural or remote areas.

“We have invested an additional $2.1 million to the Scheme so that we can ensure more people get access to concessions.

“Public consultation is very important as we want to create a new Scheme that is fairer, simpler, less open to exploitation and will suit a range of circumstances.”

Copies of the survey are being sent to all existing Scheme members and seniors aged 65 years or older.

Community forums are being held throughout the Territory and feedback on the Scheme can be provided in person, by phone or email or online at www.haveyoursay.nt.gov.au

Public consultation on the Scheme closes 31 August 2017.
