Free dementia education courses for carers and volunteers

Dementia Australia has announced that they will be running a series of free educational courses for family, carers, friends and volunteers, of people who are living with dementia in the Albury region.

The free carer education courses will be held on:

  • Thursday 18 January from 9.30am – 2.30pm at the Commercial Club, 618 Dean Street Albury. This session will cover the nature of dementia, effective communication and activities and changed behaviours.
  • Thursday 25 January from 9.30am – 2.30pm at the Commercial Club, 618 Dean Street Albury and will cover the impact of dementia on the person and their carer, community services and planning ahead.

Dementia Australia, Acting General Manager, Services, Ms Barbra Williams said, dementia was now a part of life for more than 413,000 people living with dementia, their families and carers in Australia. “The vast majority of people living with dementia in the community rely on a carer to support them,” she said.

“Our carer education programs are designed to help family, carers and friends of people living with dementia, increase their understanding of dementia and offer ideas for improving quality of life.

"The courses will provide a basic understanding of dementia and effective communication techniques for carers, whilst also providing practical strategies to support positive interactions and improved well-being”, she said.

“Attending a carer education course provides participants with the opportunity to meet other carers, families and friends who share a similar experience and find out about accessing local support services.”

“Our volunteers are also invaluable in providing much needed assistance to families, carers and people living with dementia. Dementia Australia will also be running a free workshop for volunteers in the Albury region” said Ms Williams.

“This workshop will support the great work volunteers do in the local community”.

”This workshop will support volunteers by providing information about dementia, its impact on the person and an opportunity to learn strategies for communication and engagement.”

The volunteer education workshop will be held on Thursday 1 February from 9.30am – 12.30pm at the Commercial Club, 618 Dean Street, Albury.

Registration is essential for all of these workshops.
