Victorian seniors are being encouraged to take advantage of potential savings now available on their electricity and gas bills through the Victorian Seniors Card Program.
Minister for Ageing David Davis said this is the first time the program is offering a Seniors Card discount on retail energy plans.
The initiative is part of the Seniors Card Age Friendly Partners program which is designed to use government and private sector partnerships to engage with older people.
AGL is offering discounts on its market rate usage charges with discounts of up to 28 per cent on electricity and up to 16 per cent on gas available to Seniors Card holders.
The Water and Sewage Concession has also increased by 2.5 per cent for 2014-15 and there is also a $50 Fire Services Property Levy concession for holders of pensioner concession cards and Department of Veterans’ Affairs gold cards (TPI) – Totally and Permanently Incapacitated and War Widows on their principal place of residence.
Seniors can tap into information available on the Victorian Government Seniors Online and Switch On websites, to help them compare publicly available energy offers and learn how to reduce their energy usage with practical energy saving tips.
940,000 Victorian Seniors Card holders are entitled to a range of discounts from more than 4,000 businesses right around the state.
Brian and Judy Mitcham, of Oakleigh, this week became the first seniors to sign up to the AGL Discount Energy Plan for Seniors Card holders. Initial calculations estimate that switching to AGL and taking up the special Victorian Seniors Card holder offer will save the Mitchams over $500 on their annual household energy bills compared with their current energy plans.
And existing AGL clients who are Seniors Card holders are also eligible to transfer to the Discount Energy Plan. Enid Shahvelli together with her husband William, of Bentleigh, are existing AGL customers and could save almost $300 annually on their electricity and gas bills.
Card holders will also be able to collect flybuys points when they pay their AGL home energy bills, join AGL’s exclusive rewards program and receive discounts on Home Energy Check Ups, LED lighting and solar products.
Seniors Card holders will also benefit from receiving their bills on a monthly basis.
Savings will vary depending on individual circumstances, including meter type, usage, location and the customer’s current energy plan.
